  • 16/11/2011 Friends of Oxley Creek Common held a public meeting at Corinda Bowls Club at Nosworthy Park to discuss objections to the proposed bikeway across Oxley Creek to Oxley Creek Common.

  • 25/9/2011 Friends of Oxley Creek Common joined with Oxley Creek Catchment to celebrate World Rivers Day on the Common.  Between Sherwood Road and the big red building, 400 trees were planted by volunteers.  Thanks also go to the Rotary Club for providing burgers and sausages.

  • 4/9/2011 The early morning bird watching was led by Professor Hugh Possingham and on that particular day 75 bird species were sighted.

  • 18/6/2011  AGM, Special Meeting and afternoon tea was held.  A successful proposal was put to the membership which resulted in a change of name of the incorporated body to Friends of Oxley Creek Common Inc.

  • 15/1/2011 Benarrawa Community Centre, Graceville thanked us for helping them clean out their Community Centre after the floods had gone through it just about up to the roof.  Slipery mud was everywhere.  We were challenged just to stay upright.  It was like a war zone and unbelievable unless you were there.  Thanks to all helpers.

  • 24/10/2010  9am to 12 noon.  A very successful tree planting event was held with another 100 trees and understory planted.  We transported people around to Pelican Lagoon in cars so they would not be too tired to participate.  Mulch was provided by the State Govt Works Dept.  Some of our older tress were helped also by removing long grass around them and spreading some mulch.  Thanks everybody.

  • 15/8/2010  BIRDWATCHING  8am to 11am was run by Professor Hugh Possingham.  A very informative leasurely walk down to Pelican Lagoon and back was followed by a lovely morning tea and a chat.

  • 18/7/2010    PEAKS TO POINT FESTIVAL – Family Fun Day at the Common.  Thanks to OCCA for helping to organise this day with funding provided by Brisbane City Council.  Friends of Oxley Common ran a compostmaking event.  As well we encouraged volunteers to take a 20 min walk around to six foot high trees to remove the green plastic sleves which were starting to hinder the growth of the trees on the pathway.

  • 27/6/2010    AGM, MORNING TEA, AND PLANTING.  Election of offices resulted in Marion Forrest (president), Fred Olsen (Vice President), Marj Dixon (secretary), Karen Possingham (treasurer), Faseny McPhee (management committee member). Thanks to lots of our members for their coming.  This made for a lovely event and produced some good exchanges of ideas on how FOOC could proceed.  Morning tea was scrumptious as usual and we planted tomatoes, comphry, lemon grass and passionfruit.

  • 18/4/2010        two events        BIRDWATCHING EVENT          -6am to 9am.  Professor Hugh Possingham led the event and informed us he has now sighted & recorded 186 species of birds on The Common over the last 4 years.          PLANTING SEEDS & DISCUSSING A COMMUNITY FARM FOR THE COMMON-9am to 10.30am.

  • 26/1/2010 AUSTRALIA DAY BBQ & CRICKET-  4pm from onwards. Lovely event with people being very Australian by joining in the social cricket.  Thanks to all who came and made it a worthwhile event.

  • 4/10/2009 BIRDWATCHING EARLY MORNING EVENT-6am to 9am.  Professor Hugh Possingham led the event and shared his knowledge about the 176 species of birds which he has personally sighted and recorded on The Common over the last 3 years.  We provided tea, coffee, muffins & fruit after the walk.

  • 2/8/2009 TREE PLANTING MORNING EVENT was held around at Pelican Lagoon. That particular day was National Tree Planting day. We had Planet Ark’s advertising assistance and attracted many volunteers who planted over 120 trees and schrubs.

  • 6/6/2009 BBQ/AGM/SPEAKER Scarlett Patrick.  A cold night but the fillet steak, donated by John of Marcelford Wholesale Meats, was yummy.  Scarlett proved to be a very inspirational speaker indeed as she spoke of her experiences as a young Uni student helping Cuba to feed its people.  She also talked about the benefits of food in the city, resilience and sustainability.

  • 31/1/2009 SEEDSAVING WORKSOP PLUS TALK ABOUT A COMMUNITY FARM ON THE COMMON.  This event was well attended and the gathered community folk expressed a wish, not only to start a community farm on the Common, but also to start this farm as soon as possible.  Go to Current Projects to see photos of the meeting and the seedsavig workshop.

  • 14/12/2008 for our Christmas event we held another early morning BIRD WATCHING lead by Prof. Hugh Possingham. So thanks Hugh.  We provided muffins, fruit, tea & coffee. This is always a popular event.

  • 9/8/2008 FAMILY STAR WATCHING 6-8PM.  We joined, once again, with the Sth East Qld Astronomical Assoc who brought their large telescopes and shared their knowledge and enthusium.

  • 20/7/2008 Peaks to Points FAMILY FUN DAY launched on The Common.  Thanks to our sponsor The Sherwood Services Club, Friends gave free train rides out to the Secret Forest and Pelican Lagoon.  We had a full train each ride and children and adults were extremely interested in their COMMON.

  • 22/6/2008 BBQ, AGM FOLLOWED BY A GAME OF FUN PETENQUE 12 – 2PM. We enjoyed lovely weather starting  with a BBQ at 12 noon.  This was followed by the AGM and then a game of Petenque.  All who attended seemed to enjoy the gathering.

  • 25/11/2007 END OF YEAR BBQ BREAKFAST FOLLOWED BY WATERING, MULCHING & REPLACING 60 TREES AROUND AT PELICAN LAGOON – from 8am

  • 23/9/07 EARLY MORNING BIRD WATCHING-6am to 9am  We provided muffins, fruit, tea & coffee at 6am.  This was followed by a talk by Prof Hugh Possingham followed by a leasurly bird walk to Pelican lagoon lead by Hugh with his team of uni students

  • 21/7/07 FAMILY STAR WATCHING NIGHT-6.30 to 8.30pm We joined with the Sth East Qld Astronomical Society who shared their vast amount of knowledge and their telescopes.

  • 2/6/07 AGM & FAMILY FILM NIGHT-AGM 5pm was followed by hot soup, a short environmental film & main film ”The Power of Community-How Cuba Survived Peak Oil”

  • 25/3/07 starting at 4PM-  TREE PLANTING AT PELICAN LAGOON was followed by BBQ to celebrate “World Day for Water, & World Forestry Day”

  • 3/2/07 BBQ 5pm followed by a Full Moon walk to Pelican Lagoon getting to know FROG & BAT CONSERVATION ISSUES with Dr Grant Wardell-Johnson & Dr Moni Rhodes

  • 9/12/06 CHRISTMAS BBQ 6.30pm followed by live music provided by Tennyson Duo (viola & cello)

  • 16/9/06 From 4pm, to cellebrate World Clean Up Day, we attemped to CLEAN UP REMNANT SALVINIA from the edges of Pelican Lagoon – afternoon tea was provided

  • 22/7/06 Hot soup 5pm followed by AGM & FILM NIGHT under the stars showing film “Whale Rider” & hot chocolate

  • 30/4/06 a fun afternoon starting with a 12 noon sassage sizzle by Sherwood Scouts then our FUN PETANQUE TOURNAMENT followed by Wine Tasting with Sirromet Wines

  • 10/12/05 byo finger food 6pm followed by a CHRISTMAS SOCIAL MUSICAL EVENING with live music by Tennyson Duo (viola & cello)

  • 23/10/05 6am Breakfast & BIRDWATCHING walk to Pelican Lagoon led by Prof. Hugh Possingham and assistance from Birds Queensland

  • 23/7/05 Hot soup 5.45pm followed by a MOONLIGHT MEANDER to Look& Listen for nightlife on the Oxley Creek Common
